Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project.
A lot of people don’t know what Celiac disease is so my purpose of my genius hour project was to make people around town more aware of what Celiac disease actually is. The reason why I wanted to get it out in the open and around town is because most people that unknowingly have it go undiagnosed and later find out they have it mostly because of health issues. It’s more difficult to go gluten free while you’re older because of all of the effects it has on your body. I want people to be aware because the sooner they know if they have it the sooner the symptoms will go away. Another purpose is to raise money for the foundation that researches the disease and helps people understand it what Celiac disease really is.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey.
The process of my genius hour was not what I wanted it to be. At the beginning of the year I had a set amount I wanted to reach to donate to the celiac disease foundation, which was one hundred dollars. I also wanted to have a bake sale in order to reach the amount of money I had set by the end of the year. I had a plan to put posters up so people would know what celiac was exactly. At the end of each week all I had was plans to do but as a procrastinator I never committed or fulfilled those plans.
I had all year to do something and never did. I had plans of raising even more money than my set goal. My thoughts were “I’ll do it this weekend” but when the weekend came I told myself “I’ll do it this upcoming week” and so forth and it became a habit. With the lack of motivation I did complete all of my blogs as I was told. I also shared my knowledge about celiac mostly only on my blog page and when anybody asked about what it was in person I would tell them my knowledge of what I know and what I have learned and where they could look for more answers.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be?
I shared my knowledge and learning on my blog and to people who have come up to me via message or in person asking about Celiac disease. I have explained to friends and family of what it is and what could happen in the long run and it seems they pass the message along. I have seen posts on facebook asking tips and recipes for gluten free foods and reply instantly telling them good food ideas or what websites to go to that may help. I have set up bins to raise money at Holiday gas station that explains what Celiac is on the back so they know what they are donation to.
I was hoping my result to be donating the set amount of money, or more, to the foundation and getting people more aware of what it is. I was hoping more people would come up to me and ask about it and how it affects your life. I was also hoping to have more people get tested for the disease because it’s becoming more common than back in the day.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why?
If I could change anything it would have been to talk to the health class about being aware of the disease even though it may not be contagious you can still get it. I would have felt more accomplished doing that than making posters and donation bins. I would be feel more accomplished because most people, like myself, don't stop and look what they are putting their change into or to stop and look at a poster. I would have made donation jugs earlier to raise even more money and maybe made a flyer to hand out to people.
I would also change my motivation. I would have done my plans accordingly with having a bake sale, putting up posters and putting out jugs for donations. I have only accomplished one of my plans that I set for myself and it makes me disappointed in myself because I know it is important for people to be aware.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments.
My successes and accomplishments are not what I expected. I only achieved one of my plans that I had set for myself. I feel like I should have accomplished all of my goals or plans with all the time I’ve had, which is most of the school year and maybe achieve more than that by speaking to a class or give a powerpoint to my classmates. I could have put my blog address on the nutrition page on the KHS website which would make parents aware of Celiac. Overall I feel very un-accomplished with my genius hour project because of the little progress I have made.
